About MAF's Charitable Status

Due to our Founder's position as a faculty member of Stony Brook University, The Madagascar Ankizy Fund gets its 501(c)(3) status through The Stony Brook Foundation (SBF). The purpose of the Stony Brook Foundation is to "raise and manage private funds on behalf of Stony Brook University." SBF issues annual reports and audited financial statements. All gifts to MAF are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

The Stony Brook Foundation takes 8% in overhead from your donation. This is a relatively low overhead rate that allows SBF to run its operations. The Ankizy Fund employs two staff and several teachers in Madagascar. Our US staff (Founder and CEO) work on an entirely voluntary basis. We do not have overhead costs for things like rent, web hosting, book keeping, etc. so most of your donation will go directly to helping Malagasy children.

What happens after I donate?

You will receive a tax letter from SBF thanking your for your donation. Likewise your details will be provided to MAF so that we can send you mailings to keep you abreast of our goings-on. If you do not wish to receive these mailings please send an email to us letting us know. Some of our donors have also received mail outs from Stony Brook University. We are working to correct this issue, but in the meantime please contact The Stony Brook Foundation: (631) 632-4353 to be removed from their lists.

What is my donation used for?

Our mission is to build schools and provide health care to villagers living in remote areas. Unless you designate a specific purpose for your funds, we will use your donation for the following types of projects: to build a school, to pay teachers, to provide school supplies to students, to build a well, to provide training in basic health and sanitation, to pay our Malagasy staff, etc.
